Man and girl, beaten to death, burnt in Gaya

Watch out, wayward lovers, Khap Killings are sprouting to Bihar! Some 110 kms away from Patna, the state capital, a 26 year old man and a 16 year old girl were first beaten to death and then cremated in a village in Gaya district of Bihar and then set on fire by the villagers.

The incident happened at Ametha village under the Wajirganj police station of Gaya district.

Jairam Manjhi, 28, who had eloped with a 16-year old girl from Ametha, his wife’s village. He belonged to the neighbouring Kasadih village.

Married to Shakuntla Devi of Ametha village, Manjhi had three children. While visiting his in-laws village he had fallen for the 16-year old girl living next door.

On Wednesday, said the police, they fled from the village, but were huted down by the girl’s family. They were caught at neighbouing Paharpur village under Fatehpur police station.

They were brought back to the village Panchayat. The Panchayat, in presence of the family members of the girl and Jairam’s in-laws, proclaimed the death penalty to them.

The enraged villagers, said police, caught the duo and lynched them. They later cremated the bodies outside the village.

“Prime facie it appears to be case of honor killing. A case has been lodged in this connection with the local police station of Wazirganj and the mortal remains of the bodies would be sent for forensic test”, Manu Maharaj, Gaya Superintendent of Police, told the press.

Altogether 15 villagers, including eight women and seven males, have been named in the case while one woman, said to be aunt of the deceased girl, has been arrested by the police.

“The other named accused too would be arrested soon”, said the Gaya SSP, who had reached the village soon after the incident and took sock of the situation. The situation at the village is normal now, he said.
