La Mart’s : two principals inducted

Calcutta : La Martiniere School on Wednesday inducted two new principals together. The first time the schools got new principals on the same day was over a century and three-quarters ago in 1836.

Rupkatha Sarkar became the principal of the girls’ school and  John Rafi took charge of La Martiniere for Boys.

Sarkar has been the vice-principal of the school for last 13 years. On Wednesday, when she joined the prayers before the choir sang and Bishop Ashoke Biswas blessed her, Sarkar reminisced, “It’s been 14 long years that I have been associated with the legacy called La Martiniere. But today, I feel more responsible having to carry this legacy forward. Great leaders have worked for La Marts and I feel burdened to carry the responsibility,” she said.

The new principal to thanked her colleagues and said in an echo of ‘The Sound of Music’, “We work together as a group. Your labour will never go in vain. We will work, sing and climb the mountains together and God will be with us”.

John Rafi, the new principal of LMB, also  former vice-principal said, “It will take some time before the new responsibility sinks in. I have been around for three years and hence I am aware of the greatness that this school reflects. It is one of the most glorious and proud day of my life.”

Rafi  wants to usher in change. “My aim is to ensure a better environment for my teachers. The school staff have to enjoy and accomplish their task. Teachers should not carry the burden of work back to their home. Thus, staff satisfaction is very important and once they are happy everything will be in place. My boys too should not only be happy and passionate to learn but they should be happy for life. They should be thorough such a training in school when they emerge as gentleman with values and are extremely polished,” he added.

Supriyo Dhar, secretary of the La Martiniere School governing body, said, “This is one of the rarest of rare occasions. Since 1836, this is the first time we have inducted two principals together.”
