Gun runners caught in Nagaland

DIMAPUR [Nagaland]: – In a major breakthrough, a joint team of 29 Assam Rifles and Dimapur Police busted an arms smuggling network operating in various localities of Dimapur and arrested eight arms smugglers, including two NSCN-IM cadres, on Monday.

A total of 10 weapons, which included seven new pistols (four Berettas, two Llamas and an Astra) and an AK series rifle, were recovered from their possession. These arms were to be smuggled out to other parts of the country.

A defence release on Tuesday said that acting on specific input from HQ 6 Sector Assam Rifles, the joint team of Assam Rifles and Dimapur police conducted search operations in various localities of Dimapur, such as Burma Camp, Eros Lane, Dhansiri, Darogajan and Chumukedima. During these operations, an arms dealer, identified as Sanjay Sharma, was arrested and eight pistols were recovered from his possession.

Based on information given by Sanjay Sharma, six other arms dealers, including a NSCN-IM cadre identified as John Longthasa, a 70-year-old woman identified as one Mary, a suspected woman cadre of NSCN-IM identified as Awon Angkang, one Rajesh Gupta and three other persons supporting the racket were apprehended from different locations.
