Naga Tribes Council born

DIMAPUR: Despite the differences between the Naga Hoho and various tribes over the formation of a parallel body, the Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) was formally launched in Kohima.

The function was held at Angami Public Organisation (APO) conference hall where the house unanimously approved a list of eight officials headed by Thepfulhouvi Solo as the president and Nribemo Ngullie as the general secretary to lead the newly constituted organisation for five years (2013-2018).

In his address, the NTC convenor P Pius Lotha said that it was a red letter day for the Naga tribes in Nagaland, as tribal leaders of different tribes, after several rounds of contacts, consultations and deliberations with different tribal leaders and Hoho presidents, decided to have a platform that every aboriginal Naga aspired and longed for. There was no such platform to raise issues of interest and protect the Nagas, as the State was in turmoil due to numerous factors, he said.

Lotha asserted that no unilateral, arbitrary approach was adopted in forming the NTC. The objective of the NTC is to foster the spirit of unity and fraternity among the Nagas. It would promote, protect and preserve the social fabric and cultural heritage of Nagaland, he said. The NTC would extend the hand of solidarity towards each member tribe and emphasise the importance of peace and eschewing violence. It would promote peaceful co-existence among all sections of people, he said.

“We have to introspect meaningfully what we have achieved and what transition has taken place in these 50 years of Statehood,” he said. The 16-point agreement is the turning point in the fate of the Nagas through which “we were carved out to be recognized as the 16th State of the Indian Union.”

On the clash between the Naga Hoho and various tribes over the formation of a parallel body, he said Naga Hoho is an apex body representing all Nagas and its office-bearers are drawn from different tribes irrespective of the jurisdiction representing the tribe they belong to. It should therefore have no issue to deliberate about the formation of the NTC.
