Man throws acid on pregnant wife for refusing embryo sex test

LUCKNOW: A man threw acid on his pregnant wife when she refused to undergo a sex determination test. The media say he was ‘ desperately longing for a son’. He was arrested on Tuesday.

The incident took place in Bazarkhala area in the last week of July. But the victim’s family filed a complaint on Tuesday after which the accused, a man called  Naim, was arrested and sent to jail. Police said that charges will be framed against him after doctors’ opinion and victim’s statement.

The incident took place at the couple’s residence at Tudiyaganj area in Bazarkhala. Naim had been struggling to meet ends as he already had five daughters. This time he desperately wanted a son and asked his wife to abort the child in case it was female.

As she was not willing to go ahead with the test, Naim first assaulted her and then threw acid.

After her father heard of the incident, he took his daughter to Kanpur for treatment.

Women rights activists learned about the incident and convinced Yaseen, victim’s father, to speak up against attempted female foeticide and vitriolage. Sex determination of embryos is illegal in India.

Subsequently a case was lodged against the accused and he was arrested and sent to jail on Tuesday.

A large number of people still have such an orthodox and wrong thinking….they are willing to kill but not willing to change their “beliefs”.

Yet another woman falls victim to a this desperate desire for a male child… but isn’t society, convention, and stigma also to blame?
