Darjeeling, Dooars under ‘People’s Curfew’ from August 19

North Bengal: Tourists and others better steer clear off the Darjeeling Himalayas for the coming week. In brief, there’ll be nobody to welcome you.

The Hill people of Darjeeling and Dooars have effectively thumbed their noses at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Bannerjee. They have announced a five day Janata Curfew starting 19th August. This time it’s an ‘all party action committee’ that has given the call.

The All Party Action Committee on Gorkhaland, a newly formed all party committee to spearhead the movement for the separate state of Gorkhaland, inclusive Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangh (BGP), All India Gorkha League (AIGL), Communist Party of Revolutionary Marxists (CPRM) etc have called for ‘Janata Curfew’ from 19th August to 23rd August, when all the people will stay at home.

This will be followed by ‘Torch Rallies’ in the hills and parts of Dooars Terai. On the 26th of August, people will create a Human Chain, wherein in people will be adorned with various boards calling for the creation of the separate state of Gorkhaland.

On 27th the All Party Action Committee on Gorkhaland will meet again to chart further course of action.

The All Party Action Committee on Gorkhaland will then again meet on 28th of August to chart further agitational programmes.

Rev. Enos Das Pradhan while addressing the press conference called for Central Government’s intervention in the movement before it is too late.
