Sikkim celebrates Bhanu Bhakta Jayanti

GANGTOK: Sikkim Chief minister Pawan Chamling urged government employees to take greater interest in cultural programmes in the state. Sikkim celebrated the 199th Bhanu Jayanti with great enthusiasm on Saturday.

The day-long programme started with the garlanding of the statue of Adi Kavi Bhanu Bhakta Acharya at Zero Point here followed by a traditional and cultural rally.

A cultural competition was also organised on the occasion at MG Marg here.

The programme was organised by the Bhanu Jayanti Celebration Committee under the aegis of Nepali Sahitya Parishad. During the afternoon programme at Manan Kendra Chief Minister Pawan Chamling felicitated Rudra Poudyal, renowned Nepali literary figure with the prestigious Bhanu Puraskar for his contribution to Nepali language and literature.

He also felicitated Sukraj Subba and Dhendup Lepcha with Bhasa Seva Harish Moktan Alleray and Bindeswari Prasad with Sahitya Srijana Seva, Deo Kumar Dumi with Sangeet Seva, Sushri Ranju Lamichaney with Natya Seva, Sagar Subba with Chitrakarita Seva Shri and Bhim Rawat with Patrakarita Seva Shri.

Chamling during his address opined that Bhanu jayanti can further be strengthened as a Community Unity Day. Hinting at the low participation of government employees at the function, he said that the government has given a gazetted holiday on the occasion of Bhanu Jayanti which should be taken by the government employees as their responsibility towards the language and literature and attend such functions.
