UP cops try to flush out illegals in University Hostels

ALLAHABAD, Uttar Pradesh : Crude bombs, handmade pistols, illegal inmates! Allahabad University hostels have become a bed of ‘criminal activities’, and the Police force is trying to flush the young hoodlums out.

This week, district police have raided two hostels, including one of Allahabad University, to flush out illegal inmates. The raids were conducted in early morning hours of Sunday and Monday following information of youth with criminal background using these hostels as safe hideout. The two hostels that were raided were SD Jain and PCB.

A source revealed that a few varsity hostels where a majority of inmates were from eastern UP had turned into a safe hideouts for criminals and their weapons. In the past too, police had seized crude bombs and handmade pistols from these hostels.

As per the varsity records, 4,200 students live in varsity’s eight boys and four girl’s hostels along with five hostels belonging to the trust. Even varsity authorities claimed that a few illegal inmates were in fact hardened criminals.

Although the authorities of Allahabad University had conducted raids in various hostels, both belonging to AU and that of the trusts, in the present academic session and tried to flush out illegal inmates, but the issue of illegitimate and unscrupulous elements using these hostels as a safe hideout and enjoying a free stay at different hostels continues to haunt the varsity authorities and inmates alike.

However, in absence of a monitoring system, including regular patrolling, AU has so far been unable to check illegal inmates. Though the hostel rule book mentions that every inmate should register his or her entry and exit in the log book, it is never practiced especially in boys’ hostel, said an AU official. With most of hostel superintendents staying outside the premises the situation remains grim. Owing to absence of superintendents, illegal inmates occupy hostel rooms while legal allottee is made to run from post to pillar to get possession.

Commenting on the issue, SP Crime A K Pandey said “it is evident from recent cases of violence as witnessed in front of KPUC hostel and more recently targeting of Prof B N Singh’s house that hostels of AU and trusts have turned into safe hideouts of criminals. The raids are being conducted to flush out such elements.”

“The police are welcome to raid any hostel. Though unfortunate but the fact is that these illegal and unscrupulous elements have returned in the hostels after we conducted raids and the same is being flushed out by police in recent raids”, said the Chief Proctor of AU Prof Mata Ambar Tiwari. The legal inmates have nothing to worry as they should keep this in mind that police is targeting only the illegal and anti-social elements in their raids, he added.
